String Trios - 'Hoffmeister'
Published by Hoffmeister in 1788 without an opus number, this set of six string trios are among Wranitzky’s earliest printed compositions. Most likely these trios were composed several years before this publishing date, as is suggested by the more elaborate sets of trios surviving in autographs from 1787 and 1789. Indeed, the writing of string trios seems to have occupied Wranitzky only in the beginning of his compositional career. On a smaller scale and less technically demanding than Wranitzky’s other contributions in the genre, this set of trios seem to have been more clearly aimed to amateur players. As opposed to the concertante style of the other sets, the violin dominates and the viola and violoncello are here only occasionally given solo passages, and never of a virtuoso caliber.
